It is believed that Prince Parameswara had named the area after the Melaka tree, which he was sitting under when he witnessed a feisty mousedeer outsmarting his dog. The tree he was sitting on was along the banks of the Melaka River, which has over the last couple of years been turned into the tourist spot with the Popular River Cruise
